We are loving this line up!

Cinderella, world-renowned choreographer Karole Armitage & critically acclaimed author Brian Castner were all topics of conversation over coffee at Mrs. London’s the other day. What do they all have in common..? Enter Bates Childress, the charming new Director of Development for Opera Saratoga. We had the pleasure of meeting Bates this week & he shared some of the just released details about this season’s Opera Saratoga Summer Festival with us. It’s a line up that will make you look twice, for all the right reasons.

If you aren’t familiar with Opera Saratoga, they actually first began as the Lake George Opera in 1962, playing to an audience of 230 people. Now they bring world-class opera to our entire region as Opera Saratoga and last year their performances reached nearly 25,000 people. This summer, with new artistic and general director Lawrence Edelson at the helm, Opera Saratoga is shaking things up a bit. For starters, if you don't know the name Karole Armitage  we can say with some certainly that you’ve seen her choreography. Her body of work is staggering & includes choreographing music videos for both Madonna & Michael Jackson {including 'Vogue'..yes, VOGUE}, two Broadway productions, Cirque de Soleil and several feature films. Well this summer Karole and her dance company, the New York-based Armitage Gone!, have accepted an invitation to come to Saratoga and create a special, site-specific production of Dido and Aeneas for Opera Saratoga.

The production will feature Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano as Dido and will be performed outside, under the stars at the National Museum of Dance. {Yes, tickets are on sale now, find them right here! }

The next production at this year's Summer Festival is a world debut, featuring an opera based on the critically acclaimed memoir written by Brian Castner, ‘The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life that Follows’. Composer Jeremy Howard Beck and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann have transformed this powerful story of a soldier’s return from Iraq and his struggle to re-integrate into life at home, from a book to a full-scale production.

Opera director David Schweizer makes his Opera Saratoga debut with The Long Walk, with celebrated American conductor Steven Osgood & Grammy Award winning Baritone Daniel Belcher returning to Saratoga in the role of Brian. The Long Walk will close the season, with Rossini’s classic Cinderella kicking off Opera Saratoga’s Summer Festival on July 2nd.
