The Derby might be taking place south of here but that doesn't mean that Saratogians don't get full blown Derby Fever! This year you'll be able to indulge not just your love for the ponies, but also sample some incredible dishes and cocktails all while surrounded by the history of this great sport at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame just steps from the historic Saratoga Racetrack.
Doors will open for this year’s inaugural Bacon, Brews, and Brims: a Kentucky Derby Party event at 3:30pm at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame where guests will be greeted with the Derby’s signature cocktail, a Mint Julep and the hip sounds of Funk evolution playing in the Hall of Fame. At registration, each guest will be given a tasting glass, two raffle tickets, and opportunity to pose next to a prized Kentucky Derby Trophy from the Museum’s collections. Participants will make their way through all of the Museum’s exhibits and galleries for samplings of bacon dishes, craft brews, wine and spirits, as well as an opportunity to win authentic racing items at our stationed raffle. This includes: two tickets with bus transportation to the Belmont Stakes, four tickets to the Travers post draw at Druthers, a bottle of top shelf Bourbon, and a Designer Derby Hat from Saratoga Trunk.
Guests can also enter a drawing for a Whitney Race Day experience that will include: a tour of the Oklahoma Track, the Museum’s private box for the Whitney Stakes race (seats 5), followed by dinner at Druthers. If you’re new to the sport and tradition, you can test your luck with their blind drawing of $2 bets that will only build to the excitement of the race. For the handicap, a betting rewards program will also be onsite to help guests establish an account for more advanced wagering.
There will be big screen TVs set up in the Museum with the Derby preshow, and a Museum racing form in their event program. Leading up to post time, announcements – including the awards for best dressed, best bacon dish, and winner of the raffle items – will take place before “they’re off” over the big screen in the official Hall of Fame of Thoroughbred racing.
We chatted with Hilary Hurley, the Director of Development at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame about this must do Saratoga event. "The Derby Party is a chic and authentic experience for the racing and foodie enthusiast that will kick-off the Saratoga racing season. Celebrate in style while supporting a national treasure that honors a sport so deeply rooted in our community’s history."
Stay tuned to the Saratoga Social for style tips on what to wear (for the ladies and the gents) and highlights on what tipples and bites you can expect at this horsey bash. Get your tickets early because this party is guaranteed to sell out. This is going to be the place to be seen on Derby Day, will we be seeing you there?
